Hyperpigmentation (patches of skin that look darker than the rest) is one of the most common skin concerns, on the face and the body. It often shows up as post-acne marks, sun spots, or darker knees, elbows, underarms and inner thighs. Moroccan beauty has a long tradition of gentle, natural brightening, built around one hero ingredient: blue nila.
What causes hyperpigmentation?
- Sun exposure, the biggest trigger of all
- Post-inflammatory marks left behind by spots, scratches or irritation
- Friction, for example on underarms and inner thighs
- Hormonal changes
If a mark changes shape, size or colour, or you're concerned, always see a GP or dermatologist.
The Moroccan brightening routine
Once a week: the body ritual
- Soften: apply Liquid Black Soap with Blue Nila to warm, damp skin and leave for 5–10 minutes. Rinse.
- Exfoliate: use the Kessa Glove to remove dull, dead skin, so brighter skin can show through.
- Brighten: apply a Nila mask (¼–½ teaspoon of nila in natural yoghurt) to darker areas for 10 minutes, then rinse.
- Nourish: finish with Argan Oil.
Once or twice a week: the face mask
- For dark spots and dullness: a Nila and yoghurt mask.
- For dark spots with oily skin or blackheads: Ranila, rhassoul with nila. See our Ranila guide.
Full recipes are in our complete nila guide.
Every day: protect
- Tone with Frankincense Water or Orange Blossom Water.
- Nourish with Prickly Pear Seed Oil.
- Wear SPF every morning. Without sun protection, dark spots come back.
How long does it take?
Skin renews itself roughly every four weeks, so give any routine at least 6–8 weeks of consistent use. Many people notice a brighter, fresher look after the first mask, with a more even tone building over time.
Gentle is better
- Don't over-exfoliate: irritation can create new marks.
- Patch test new products 24 hours before first use.
- Avoid broken or freshly shaved skin.
Frequently asked questions
Is nila powder good for hyperpigmentation?
Nila is traditionally used in Morocco to brighten skin and even out the look of dark spots. Results build with regular weekly use and daily SPF.
Does nila whiten the skin?
No. Nila brightens dull skin and helps even out the look of dark spots. It doesn't change your natural skin colour.
Can I use this routine on dark underarms and inner thighs?
Yes. Use the nila and yoghurt mask on clean skin, and wait at least 24 hours after shaving or waxing.
How often should I use nila?
Once or twice a week on the face and body.
