Nila powder is one of Morocco's best-kept beauty secrets. For generations, Moroccan women have used this vivid blue powder in the hammam to brighten their skin and even out its tone, especially before weddings and celebrations. Today it's one of the most searched natural brightening ingredients in the UK.

This guide covers what nila is, what it does, and exactly how to use it on your face, body and underarms, including the two mask recipes we recommend.

What is nila powder?

Nila (also called blue nila or Moroccan indigo) is a finely milled powder made from the leaves of the indigo plant, Indigofera tinctoria. It has been part of Moroccan beauty rituals for centuries.

Our Nila Powder is 100% pure: indigo leaf powder and nothing else, with no added colour or fillers.

What does nila powder do for the skin?

  • Brightens dull skin: gives a fresh, luminous glow.
  • Evens skin tone: helps fade the look of dark spots and pigmentation over time.
  • Gently exfoliates: lifts dead skin cells and impurities, leaving skin smoother.
  • Refines texture: skin feels softer and looks more even.

Results build with regular use. Most people notice a brighter look after the first mask, and a more even tone after several weeks of weekly use.

Nila or Ranila: which should you choose?

  • Nila Powder is pure nila. Choose it if your main goal is brightening and a more even skin tone, on the face or body.
  • Ranila Powder Mask blends nila with rhassoul lava clay. Choose it if you also have oily skin, blackheads or clogged pores: the clay draws out oil while the nila brightens.

Many of our customers use both: Ranila as a weekly detox mask, and Nila for targeted brightening.

How to use nila powder on your face

Nila is never used neat: you mix a small amount into a creamy base. A little goes a long way, so start with ¼ teaspoon.

Mask 1: Brightening nila mask (for glow and dark spots)

You'll need:

  • 1 tablespoon natural yoghurt
  • ¼ teaspoon nila powder
  • 1 teaspoon honey (optional, for extra hydration)

How to apply:

  1. Mix the yoghurt and nila in a small bowl until smooth, then stir in the honey.
  2. Apply an even layer to clean skin, avoiding the eye area.
  3. Leave on for 10–15 minutes. Don't let it dry out completely.
  4. Wipe off gently with a damp cotton pad, without rubbing, then rinse with lukewarm water.
  5. Finish with a few drops of Prickly Pear Seed Oil or your usual moisturiser.

Applying the nila mask

Why it works:

  • Nila Powder: brightens the complexion and helps even out the look of dark spots.
  • Yoghurt: hydrates, softens and gently exfoliates with natural lactic acid.
  • Honey: nourishing and soothing, and adds radiance to dull skin.

Mask 2: Skin renewal mask (for pores and blackheads)

You'll need:

How to apply:

  1. Mix the rhassoul and nila, add the argan oil, then slowly add orange blossom water until creamy.
  2. Apply evenly to the face or body, avoiding the eyes.
  3. Leave on for 10–15 minutes, keeping it slightly damp.
  4. Wipe off with a damp cotton pad and rinse with warm water.

Why it works:

  • Nila: enhances radiance and helps even the look of skin tone.
  • Rhassoul clay: deep-cleans pores, lifts impurities, helps clear blackheads and whiteheads and refines texture.
  • Argan oil: softens, nourishes and helps skin feel more supple.
  • Orange blossom water: calms, tones and leaves a fresh glow.

Short on time? Our Ranila Powder Mask is rhassoul and nila ready-blended: just add water.

How to use nila powder on your body

Nila works beautifully on areas where skin tone is often uneven: knees, elbows, inner thighs and the back of the neck.

  • As a body mask: use the yoghurt recipe above, doubling the quantities. Apply to clean, damp skin, leave for 10 minutes, then rinse.
  • In the hammam: mix half a teaspoon of nila into Moroccan Black Soap, apply, then exfoliate with a Kessa Glove. Or use our Liquid Black Soap with Blue Nila, which has nila already blended in.

How to use nila powder on your underarms

Dark underarms are one of the most common reasons people try nila.

  1. Mix ¼ teaspoon of nila with a tablespoon of yoghurt.
  2. Apply to clean, dry underarms. Avoid freshly shaved or irritated skin; wait at least 24 hours after shaving or waxing.
  3. Leave for 10 minutes, then rinse well.
  4. Repeat once or twice a week.

For a complete brightening routine for face and body, the Nila Hyperpigmentation Set brings the essentials together.

How often should you use nila?

Once or twice a week is ideal for face and body. Give your skin at least two days between masks. Regular weekly use over several weeks gives the most even-looking results.

Tips for the best results

  • It's blue, so plan ahead: nila is highly pigmented and can temporarily tint fingers, towels and grout. Use a spoon or a silicone mask brush, and rinse your sink straight away.
  • Don't let it dry fully: a mask that cracks can feel tight. Mist it with orange blossom water if it starts to dry.
  • A faint blue tint is normal straight after rinsing and fades quickly; a second rinse or your cleanser removes it.
  • Always patch test first: apply a little to your inner arm 24 hours before your first full mask.
  • Wear SPF during the day: this protects the even tone you're working towards.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I leave nila powder on my face?
10–15 minutes. Rinse before it dries completely.

How much nila powder should I use?
About ¼ teaspoon for a face mask and ½ teaspoon for a body area. More doesn't work faster; it just adds more colour to rinse off.

How do I make a nila powder mask?
Mix ¼ teaspoon of nila into a tablespoon of natural yoghurt until smooth. Add honey for extra hydration, or rhassoul clay for oily skin.

Can I use nila powder on my body?
Yes. It's popular on knees, elbows, inner thighs, underarms and the back of the neck. See the body section above.

Is nila powder for skin whitening?
No. Nila brightens dull skin and helps even out the look of dark spots, so your skin looks fresher and more uniform. It doesn't change your natural skin colour, and we'd never recommend trying to.

Is nila safe for sensitive skin?
Nila is a single, natural ingredient, but every skin is different. Patch test first, avoid broken or freshly shaved skin, and stop if you notice irritation.

Where can I buy authentic nila powder in the UK?
Our Nila Powder is 100% pure Moroccan indigo leaf powder, dispatched within 24 hours from the UK, with next day delivery available and free UK delivery on orders over £50.
