"Strawberry legs" is the name for the tiny dark dots that can appear on the legs, a bit like the seeds on a strawberry. They're very common, completely harmless, and often frustrating. The good news: a simple weekly Moroccan ritual can make a real difference to how smooth your legs look and feel.
What causes strawberry legs?
The dots are usually open pores or hair follicles that look darker because of trapped oil, dead skin or hair. Common causes include:
- Clogged pores and follicles filled with oil and dead skin
- Shaving, especially with a blunt razor or on dry skin
- Ingrown hairs and razor bumps
- Dry skin, which makes dots and bumps more visible
If your skin is painful, very inflamed or you're unsure what's causing the bumps, please see a GP or dermatologist.
The Moroccan ritual for smoother legs
For generations, Moroccan women have kept their skin smooth with the weekly hammam. These are the same steps you can do at home in your shower:
- Steam: a hot shower for 5–10 minutes softens skin and opens pores.
- Soften with black soap: apply Moroccan Black Soap or Liquid Black Soap with Blue Nila to damp legs and leave for 5–10 minutes. Rinse.
- Exfoliate with the kessa: scrub with the Kessa Glove in circular motions to lift dead skin and clear clogged follicles.
- Nourish: finish with Argan Oil on damp skin.
Black soap and kessa glove exfoliation
Repeat once a week. Most people notice smoother skin after the first ritual, with more visible improvement over a few weeks.
Change how you remove hair
- Exfoliate before you shave, never straight after hair removal. Shaving after exfoliating lets the razor glide on clean, smooth skin.
- Always shave on wet, softened skin, using a sharp razor in the direction of hair growth.
- After hair removal, apply Cyperus Rotundus Oil to soothe skin and help minimise ingrown hairs. With regular use, regrowth can look finer over time. See our cyperus oil guide.
Between rituals
- Moisturise daily: dry skin makes dots look more obvious.
- Use a gentle scrub such as Akker Fassi with sugar mid-week if your skin likes it.
- Don't over-scrub: once a week with the kessa is enough.
Frequently asked questions
Can strawberry legs go away?
For many people, regular exfoliation, better shaving habits and moisturising make the dots much less visible. Results vary, and persistent cases are worth checking with a dermatologist.
What is the best treatment for strawberry legs at home?
A weekly routine of steam, black soap and a kessa glove, plus moisturising and gentler hair removal, is a simple and effective place to start.
Should I exfoliate before or after shaving?
Before. Exfoliating first removes dead skin that can block the razor, for a closer, smoother shave. Exfoliating straight after hair removal can irritate the skin.
Does waxing help strawberry legs?
Some people find waxing gives fewer dots than shaving. Exfoliate regularly to prevent ingrown hairs either way.
